Thank you for your time explaining all of this.I do find it rather interesting however that the very area of Scotland from which I believe my family to have come from is where I find all of the names linked together with the surnames that match exactly my Dad's DNA at the 12 and 18 marker level.
Just yesterday I found in the man's family to whom we match 25/25 -same surname-, that 2 of these other surnames that we had 12 marker matches to married into his family.
I just find that almost too overwhelming to ignore.
I certainly can't explain the DNA part but the Clannish nature of the Scots and Irish sure lend support here.
Also one other thing...since this man and my father share the same DNA at an Exact match 25/25...we both are stuck at a brick wall searching for the same name of our gggggrandfather.
The evidence is extremely strong to support that his 4th grt. grandfather and my 5th grt. grandfather (again of the same first and last name), are one and the same man.
The last time I see my 5th grt. grandfather on record is in 1774 and the first time he finds his 4th grt. grandfather is in 1775. The geography is perfect as well...what we believe to be our common ancestor moved right over the border into the next state where his 4th grt. grandfather was found.
We were certainly hopeful that this was our Common Ancestor, but from what you are saying that is probably not so at all then.
Our hopeful Common Ancestor was born c1750 if that's any help. But you are saying that a 25/25 DNA match would put our Common Ancestor even further back in time than that?
I sure wish I'd spent more time doing research on the DNA results and the probable outcomes of what it all means.
This is very disheartening news to me.I was so very excited to find out we had a 25 marker exact match to our surname and then to get all those surnames that we matched DNA to from Y Search was; I thought an added bonus.
When I found all of those surnames matched to ours in the very area of Scotland that I had been researching all along for our family I was exstatic to say the least.
But now I guess all of that research was for naught.
Thank you again for your time explaining all of this.
I don't think I will ever ~get it~ all as some of the jargon makes no sense to me, but I appreciate your efforts.
