Richard,
I have been using DNA testing to aide my genealogical research for 3 years. I have been an amateur genealogist for about 28 years. I have had myself tested at multiple labs to: a. cross check the reliability of the results for markers used in common between labs, b. learn which lab gives the best service, and c. get more marker results to further define my personal haplotype. Here is my labmerge project results to date and my comments on my experiences over the past 3 years in this nascent industry:

I believe Y-DNA testing is a useful new tool to aide one's genealogical research. While the 12 marker test was the best we had 3 years ago, I too now recommend that people start with the 25 marker test as the minimum test to consider for use in a surname project.
