Free DNA Testing
For those of you who are reluctant to spend $155-231 on a DNA test, there is a free alternative through the Sorenson Molecular Genealogical Foundation at www.smgf.org
There are several drawbacks:
(1) They don't guarantee that they will test your sample, but most seem to be tested.
(2) They do not send you the results, but you have to find the results by searching their public database for the surname and extracting the correct values by trial and error. However, it is a relatively simple process.
(3) It may take a long time for them to test you and post the reults.
(4) You have to send in a four-generation pedigree chart of as many lines as possible. They do not show the names of those born after 1900 on their website. Some ancestors in the pedigree must have been born before 1900.However,you should put in as many as possible, because that is the way to identify your record.
Many surname projects are now incorporating the results into their projects when they find them there.
Note that woman can also submit samples for MtDNA testing. However, the database is not up yet. They are also experimenting with autosomal testing on both sexes.
