To go to www.ysearch.org you can searchboth ways.
Genetic match and also surname matches.
You manually put in your markers of the male of your surname.
Then assigns an identification number, alpha/numeric.
Then putting in the ID number, then hit search.
It can search up to a certain number of similar markers.
You can do it both ways.
Surname.
and Genetic match.
I have a match on markers on that site with MILLS,BUCKLEY, ASHLEY, SLATON and HAYES/HAYS and HILTON, among others.
I have more or less tracked the BUCKLEY and ASHLEY
lines, in that they do share the same ancestors.
My MILLS however, I cannot seem to find the Common Ancestor that is supposed to link us together.
Must be back before time, and the use of surnames began, and or
as others have mentioned on this site, that a "hiccup"
happened and the child was given the surname of the
Mother.
and or, as in the case of President FORD, he took the surname of his step father. And also apparently President CLINTON. (BLAIR)
Biologically speaking, of course, the Y DNA test does tells us that the male of our surname, was given the
the gene handed down from father to son to son, to son,
etc,
to present day, our male of the surname we are researching.
So far, my brother seems to match on markers to over 15 different surnames. That is, those are the surnames of the folks who have listed their email addresses to get in
contact.
I did not, hindsight is so wonderful, ask each one, personally, which surname that they actually tested.
BIG MISTAKE, I have a feeling now.
I have posted my brother's markers on to several other web sites in the hopes of finding other matches, done through those testing facilities.
So far, have found more matches, but still no paper trail.
again, must be back before the use of surnames and or
another "hiccup" in the line. Previously referenced
reasons why the surname may not match to the markers.
Other postings I have made.
I too, have received several basically, Irate ones, that say that the person I contacted was NOT INTERESTED
whatsoever about
using DNA testing as a tool to find ones ancestors and or
related and allied family.
They wish to STRICTLY go by their paper trail.
Also a few in Canada, did not WISH to believe that their
ancestors came from the "colonies" as they still call us, here in America.
Again, biology is biology.DNA does not lie.
I believe by testing through the web site, www.familytreedna.com they have a link that allows you
to post to the www.ysearch.org web site.
Not sure if that is automatic or ?
I did it separately.
I check it periodically to see if there are any new matching information.

There seems to be now, 7 DNA kits that match each other on this site, www.familytreedna.com under MILLS.
Have posted my existing research file on www.rootsweb.ancestry.com as chekwriter
and on
www.gencircles.com as MyFamily2005 for the other side of the tree trunk, FISCHER - EVANS- BERUBE - MISHOE -PETREE/PETRIE,etc.
