Haplogroups are pretty diffuse over a wide area, so they are unlikely to be of much help in pinning down an area to research. The best place to start is where the name is common in the censuses. There are several that show the distributions on maps, such as:

The best situation would be a Y-STR match with someone of the same surname from England or who knew his family's exact origin. You can search these:
www.smgf.org (Be sure to save your results on the results page, so you do not have to reenter the data. To enter them, select the lab where you tested and enter the results. You can then switch labs to convert results to the nomenclature needed for other databases.)
www.ysearch.org
www.ybase.org
At these, you have to enter the Y-STR results into their database before searching:
www.dna.ancestry.com
www.genebase.com (They will convert the results for you.)
This post details the conversions needed between Ancestry/DNAHeritage/Genetree and FTDNA:
