I'm sorry It's taken me so long to get back to this question. I've got too many things going on.
I have a confusion problem due to Multiple Sclerosis so my comprehension is not as good as it used to be. I have a few questions especially after seeing this ad for fingerprint testing for dna again. The test I've seen twice from two different places says it will tell you if you are Melungeon, what Native American tribe you're from and things like that. Is this possible. The test costs $600.00. Would a fingerprint test be more reliable than a cheek swab?
I would like to find out if my family is Melungeon or has just mixed with the population of whatever place they were in. My family comes from Virginis, North Carolina, Maryland, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, and all over the other Appalachian states. I'm a Carter, Gist, Murray, Cashdollar, Greene, Hudgins, and I can't remember right now what else. My husband was a Martin, Shephard, and Sullivan among other things. I know he was discended from Captain Joseph Martin whose son had Martinsville, Virginis, I believe, named for him. We're related to but not descended from many Native Americans.Except for dna we couldn't prove a blood relationship. My grandfather used to tell me I was related to Sequoyah, George Gist/Guess, but I'm descended through his uncle, not him, or his father.
Will a dna test tell my family anything of help to us? Other than one grandparent I can't trace I've pretty well found out where all my relatives are from. My family have been looking for generations. That one grandparent looks like she could have come off an ad for Melungeons. She had dark or olive skin, course hair, dark grey eyes, and she was tall. Neither my grandmother or my father had grey hair hair, except for a few strands like me, until they got very sick and it turned white almost overnight.
I have always heard dna tests could tell you what part of the world your family came from and that was all. Is there anything else? Sorry for going on so. Cathy (Carter) Martin
