Robert's advice seems your best bet. Test at least 2, maybe 3 of your most remote male cousins whom you can document as linked to your most remote ancestor (each from different sons) via an established project. Then opt for 23andMe for the non-Y STR tests. You and your paternal grandmother could both takean MtDNA test, if you wish information about her part of your heritage.
And the sooner to collect DNA samples, the better. It's onlybeing realistic, not cold-spirited.
