Hi Elizabeth,
I followed your suggestion and here is the same data in spreadsheet format.
Name, Ancestor, 447, 460, 570, CDYb, 390
A, 1851, 24, 12, 17, 39, 25
B, 1854, 25, 12, 16, 40, 25
C, 1741, 25, 11, 17, 40, 25
D, 1750, 25, 12, 17, 40, 25
E, 1YYY, 26, 12, 16, 40, 26
G, 1ZZZ, 25, 12, 17, 40, 25
I note that D is the same as G, the group-defined haplotype. I agree with your statement that since "B & E both share two identical deviations on the same two markers, it is reasonable to assume without additional data that E's unknown ancestor was probably the same as that of B's ancestor".
However, I do not agree that "all of the men show a very high chance of descent from the exact same individual b. 1741 in MD" Instead I think you were on track with the idea that C and D share an "unknown ancestor of a prior generation from the one that is defined by the group's haplotype." A prior generation could be anywhere from 1 to, say, 10 generations. Here is a diagram illustrating the point within the "same family" http://dna.cfsna.net/HAP/R1b/SCT2VA_Mud.JPGhttp://dna.cfsna.net/HAP/R1b/SCT2VA_Mud.JPG
Cheers,
Colin
