Y-DNA testing is helpful, but doesn't replace traditional research. It basically does two things:(1) it shows that a genealogy is plausible, i.e., the family members are biologically related and (2) it may allow the person to match with a family of the same that has compiled a genealogy. It cannot prove exact relationships, however.
Since both Ancestry and FTDNA are offering discounts this month, it would be a good time to test. You need to be a member of a group to get the discount at FTDNA. Search with the surname in question at the two sites:
http://www.ftdna.comhttp://www.ftdna.com
http://www.dna.ancestry.comhttp://www.dna.ancestry.com
Ancestry's discount is for members only. However, you will probably want to join them for your traditional search. They have a 14-day free trial, but I don't know if that entitles a person the discount:

Also, search at:
http://www.dnaheritage.comhttp://www.dnaheritage.com
They do not offer as big a discount. However, some projects accept results from all of the companies.
