I should also like to add that while this article deals with a lot of the Germanic / Anglo-Saxon info, our particular group of what were termed I1a-N (Norse), are Not of the Anglo-Saxon group as termed by Dr. Nordtvedt's research and charts showing the different marker numbers which separate us into categories of Norse, Anglo-Saxon, Finns, Danes etc. We are closest to the Ultra Norse and somewhat close to theSwede's and Finn's and farthest from the Germanic/Dane clans.
While we do share a lot of ydna with several folks who claim to have German roots, the majority of our ydna is from Scotland, Nor. Ireland, Norway, Finland, Sweden and of course England.
However in regards to "England" I would like to note that Many of those Reporting their Ydna results simply put "England" as the place of origin they believe their earliest known ancestors came from. Our group (our Surname)so far shares not one bit of Ydna with those of our same name from England.
So getting back to those reporting their earliest roots as just "England", it seems this country has become some sort of generic answer for a lot of folks earliest known ancestral home and that may not always be the case.
For example...if someone's surname is McDonald and their haplotype is listed as I1a and they put down that their earliest known ancestor came from "England", that is how some of the testing labs and YSearch will report it.
It gives one a false sense of who we share ydna with from those Lab Reports we receive. The name McDonald is Very Scottish but that person reporting their ancestral links may not know that or only know that their earliest ancestor came over on a ship from "England", so that is where they report them from.
So our Other Surname Reports get thrown off course a bit by these individual's giving these answers about their earliest known ancestors. Some will give the states in which they lived in the U.S. and that's probably because they don't actually know where their earliest ancestors came from and that's understandable.
So I add this only so folks just starting out with theirYdna testing will be aware of this when they receive those Other Surname reports from some of the testing labs too. Don't get discouraged if you see a lot of places listed on those reports that you Know you don't have any relatives living. These are people of today reporting and again, often times they list where They Live for lack of knowledge as to where their earliest known ancestors actually came from.
OH, and one last thing...for those who are of the old I1a-N group, they are now saying that we do Not come from France either like some of the testing labs are still reporting.I Knew this before they changed the info.
And Follow those Other Surnames to whom you share the closest Ydna with. They have proved invaluable to me in finding my long lost family tree.
Everyone kept telling me there was Nothing to those Other Surname reports, well I am here today to tell you There IS !!I have found the Paper-Trails linking Several of these Other Surnames to my own, even one family whose Other Surname showed up as sharing partial ydna to me and they actually changed their last name to mine later on, so that was a pretty astounding find I thought.
So Definitely pay attention to those Other Surnames that YSearch says you share ydna with and start searching out those Genealogies that share your surname and these Other names in the same areas where your families lived and see if you can find the Connections between them too as I have.
Its been Amazing and I could Not have done it without the Ydna testing. For those of us who have been up against that "Brick Wall" with our genealogies for years, ydna testing is really helping to break down those walls and to correct the Centuries old and often erroneous genealogies that have continued to circulate incorrect data for years and years. We finally have the way of correcting these old mistakes and Ydna testing is it (in my opinion) anyway.
Hope the link I posted previously is helpful.
