Because the SMGF database shows only matching results, it is necessary to extract the rest by trial and error. Since there is a daily time limit, it is important to perform this methodically. It is best to try several likely haplotypes, such as those already known for the surname and the modals of various haplogroups, to find the closest match. The results page for each search should be bookmarked, so that it can be reused without re-entering the data. It is a good idea to edit the names of each page to something that identifies the haplotype.
Those testing at Relative Genetics can search at SMGF without re-entering data. If someone from another firm wants to search the RG database also, he can register there by entering his haplotype. There is a button on the RG results page that does an SMGF search.
The R1b modal is the best modal to try first, since most people are in that haplogroup.
The next step is to increment all of the mismatches at once by 1 and search again. Decrement the remaining ones by 2 and search again. Increment the remaining ones by 3 and so forth.
I have found that with normal settings on IE, the values are not saved between searches. The site is optimized for Foxfire, so I use it instead and have no problems. It can be downloaded for free at:
