Hi Martin
Many thanks for your e-mail.
I found your family on the 1881 census at 8 Vaughan Street, Shildon.Do you have this information? If you don't let me know. There are 7 children listed with Matthew and Elizabeth.Which one are you descended from?
The reason I ask this is that one of my husband's Ellis relatives from Shildon, Sarah Ellis, born 1912, married a Clarence Peacock, while her elder sister married Joe Dixon.
I have done a search on the IGI and have found a Matthew Peacock christened 12 October 1834 at Auckland Saint Andrew, Durham, and his parents were George and Ann Peacock.Auckland Saint Andrew is at Bishop Auckland.I have also done a search through GENUKI Durham but haven't found Elizabeth on the Baptisms for Barnard Castle (just across the river from Startforth) and there aren't any records for Holy Trinity in Startforth on this list.
I used to live at Startforth Park for a while and went to the church school there.I have the Alan Godfrey maps from 1896 & 1897 for Barnard Castle, Shildon, Bishop Auckland and Shildon for 1924.I can scan these and send them as JPEGS if you want.I also only live 3 or 4 miles from Shildon and can easily pop along and take a digital photograph of Vaughan Street for you. When the weather improves I can visit my friend who lives in Startforth and take photographs there, and at St. Andrew's in Bishop Auckland.
I shall be going to Darlington Library next Saturday and can look at the 1891 census for you.I'll also look to see what parish registers they have there. If they don't have them for Shildon and Startforth I'll have to go to the Records Office at County Hall. The only problem with this is that I can only get there in my holidays and this probably won't be until Easter.
I shall be looking for the marriage of our Joseph Dixon and Frances Ball next week so I can send for the marriage certificate. We are stuck at the moment until we get this information.
If you let me know of anything else you need looking up about these people let me know. You never know, we might be related!
