Having investigated further (due in part to the surname Dix, which I didn't have before), it now seems I'd been chasing the wrong John Gregory!! Would you believe there are 2 John Gregory's registered in Paulton in Jul Aug Spt 1851. When you check on the censuses none of them come up as 1851 though and there is one in 1850 (Louisa Dix's son) and another 2 in 1852 (one of which turns out to be mine).

I hav inadvertantly collected a lot of detail about John Canvin Gregory and Louisa if you need it.
