My Great Grandfather was born in 1852 as Andrew Dicks in Portsmouth England. He married in 1872 in Warrington as Andrew Dicks and my family has retained the spelling since. His wife Mary registered my Grandfather's birth (Arthur Dicks) in 1880 and signed the register with her mark (an X) which shows how much a part literacy played in deciding how names were spelt at the time of registration.
