The following is the beginning introduction of the background of Sarah Tieszen Duerksen in the Abraham Sarah Tieszen Duerksen genealogy family book privately printed of family in 2000 by Charles Duerksen of Parker, S. D.
Our Forefathers first lived in Holland, until a great religious persecution arose. Many Christians were killed. Menno simmons renounced the Catholic Church in in 1536 and from 15319 to 1598 over 30,000Christinas were killed. Many from Netherlands fled to other countries. The frist Christians including the Mennonites, left Holland in 1565. Some for the Prussian territory of Germany and others to Poland, where they had religious liberty for awhile. Later this liberty was taken away and the military dominance was strong, so some Christians immigrated to American in 1683 and settled near Philadelphia, but this group did not include the Tieszen family as they later moved to Russia. In 1789 the King, Frederik William II issued an edict that Christians were not permitted to buy homes in Prussia of Germany anymore; thus the future looked very dark. Some visited Holland and Germany and and some recommended them the Russian Governement. Kaiserin Catherin II invited them to come in 1786 and promised transportation, free worship, exemption from military service and free land. Many groups emigrated from 1789 to 1811. to South Russia from Germany and Poland. The Tieszen came to the Molotshna colony. in the village of Pordenau. Our relatives Peter and Elizabeth Dridger Tieszen had 6 children Sarah's father married a Anna Wiens. They came to America on the ship Cimbria and arrived at Yankton, S. D. in 1874 and came by railroad and then by wagon and horse to the open treeless prairie of Marion, Freeman, Dolton and Parker, South Dakota. Derk and Anna Wiens Tieszen parents of Sarah had 12 children.
Sarah Married Abraham Duerksen II. Ardy Stoesz.
My husband's mother is a descendant of Martha Duerksen.
