Hi Bret,
Here is a followup to my message of 6 Sep 2001 regarding your query of Johann F. Dirksen, Pekin, IL. I now have the correct information on his sailing from Bremen to Baltimore, MD.
The "Index of Passengers to Baltimore MD" Microcopy M237, Roll 29 listing for Johann is paritially INCORRECT. Here is the listing:
B-48-10-285
Dierksen, Joh. Age: 26 Occupation: Painter Nationality: Hannover Last Permanent residence: Fenneld Port of Entry: Baltimore, MD Name of vessel: Baltimore Date: 23 Mar 1868
As to the CORRECT information: The German ship, Baltimore did indeed land at Baltimore, MD, on 23 Mar 1868 but Johann was not listed among the passengers. A very kind lady at the Ft. Wayne, IN library found him for me on the passenger list of the Baltimore, but landing was really on 19 May 1868. The passenger list can be seen on "Microcopy M255, Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Baltimroe 1820-1891, Roll 16, 5 Nov 1867-31 Mar 1869." He is passenger #285.
His age and occupation are correctly listed, but his last residence is NOT Fenneld but is actually Jennelt. A slight problem in reading the written word here.
