DIRKSEN Family from Illinois

Hello there, My name is Laurie, my maiden name was DIRKSEN. This family has a lot of gaps and adoptions within its branches and is not an easy one to trace. The branch I am researching originally comes from Germany. There is a silversmith's shop still operating today (so I'm told) that still boasts the name Dirksen on its seal. The first Dirksen who came to America, brought a boy with him, possibly a nephew, with the last name of SLUITER. During the course of time, the immigrant Dirksen 'adopted' this young lad and gave him the name of Dirksen. There are letters that I possess which detail some of the trials and tribulations of the Dirksen family during the 'Pioneer' days in Illinois, some tar and feathering over religious convictions, etc... If anyone can connect to this family, please e-mail me or post a message. Happy Hunting!
Laurie
