Hello David and Flo 1.I have obtained some clarifying information on the Black- Dinwoodie family from my sister-in-law (Edith)who sent me a newspaper article dated 31 July 1950 saved by my mother. The article described Mary Steele (Black) Dinwoodie's 87TH birthday celebration in Westerly,RI at the home of her youngest daughter (and namesake)Mary Steele Dinwoodie b.1903.In an interview the celebrant stated she emigrated to the USA while pregnant with John b.1886. Her oldest daughter Letitia was 3yr6mo old on arrival (hence arrived approximately 31 January 1886). John Ann would have been 2yr3mo old.Additionaly,Edith contacted Aurelia (Dinwoodie) Gavitt,a surviving child of my Great-Uncle John and Great-Aunt Edith Dinwoodie and Aurelia cnfirmed that her father was born in Westerly RI in 1886. 2. Edith also verified that John and Mary's grave marker (River Bend cemetary,Westerly RI)records his ages as b.1859 d.1940 and her ages as b.1863,d.1952.She therefore lived to be 89 not 99 as I had previously thought. The tombstone is a rough hewn block of granite showing the drill marks on the periphery and is engaved on the polished surface with the Scottish thistle,a fitting tribute to a quarryman from Dalbeattie and his wife of over 70 years. 3.It is concluded that the Lusitania manifest of 14 February 1909 incorrectly lists John and Mary's ages as 42 and47. He would have been 50 and she 46. This trip had to be a return voyage to Scotland and not their earlier immigration voyage to the USA.Note- The Lusitania entered service in 1908. 4.Theodore E. Black, age 35yr and his wife Jane, age 31yr arrived in the USA on the Aurania on 27 February,1894 with their children Agnes age 7yr, Theodore age 3yr, and Janet age 3mo.Further attempts to determine the ship's information for John and Mary Dinwoodie were unsuccessful since that date precedes the 1892 Ellis Island cutoff date. 5. In summary, two of John and Mary's ten children were born in Scotland and eight were born in Westerly RI.Original travel from Scotland is estimated to be around 31 January 1886.I can only assume Liverpool, England to New York USA.One likely ship would be the Cunard line Etruria. Thanks to Edith Strong and Aurelia Gavitt for their information.
