Pam, I don't know how far back you have gotten on the Dinwiddies. Please excuse me if you have this info. The Dinwiddies originated in Dumphrieshire, in the vicinity of Locherbie. Our part of the family moved to Ulster (N. Ire) and in the 1720's ? they immigrated to PA (Gettysburg) which was called Marsh Creek at that time. Here is where it took me years to figure out who was who. Originally there were 3 brothers and their sister-in-law and her three sons. Their names were Thomas, James & William. The 4th brother was David who apparently died in Ulster or on the ship over. His wife Sarah came with her 3 boys, Hugh b:1722, David b:1724 & William b: 1726. This is my line from William. There were two more William's, cousins of Sarah's boys. They were the sons of James & William (your ancestor, I think). I hope I haven't confused you too much. There were four William's all together in two generations I have very little on the older William except that he was born ca 1696's probably in Ulster. He had 3 sons,,,,Henry b: 1735 d: ca 1795 Orange Co., N.C., James b: 1740 d: 1806 Greene Co., TN & William b: 1745 d: 1788 Campbell Co., VA. I have a lot of info on William & James and nothing on Henry. The only thing I have on the elder William is that he contested his brother, Thomas's Will. Apparently Thomas was never married or at least didn't have any children so he left all of his belongings to William's 3 boys and named a Mr Cox as Administrator. William didn't like that and sued to be named the administrator. I don't know if he won. Most of the earliest info is from "Tyler's Quarterly", Vol 15 & 16 among other sources. Please let me know if you have any other info. Tiss Notify Administrator about this message?
