N. A. Dinsmore from Franklin, Indiana - 1850

A handwritten letter that dates from 1850 and written to a brother from his sister,

N. A. Dinsmore, while living in Franklin Indiana. She’s trying to talk him into moving to Franklin from Sistersille. I’m not sure where Sistersville is but I did find one in West Virginia. I loved her description that she gives her brother explaining how to get to her house, as you will see in the following excerpts……

"Franklin Johnson County Indiana, August 27th, 1850,

Dear Brother,

In the providence of God, I lift my pen in answer to your kind and affectionate letter of Aug. 15th…..I was somewhat surprised at the heading of your letter and more at the speedy arrangements of your matters. It may be for the best but I do not like such speedy work. You may think that it was no more so than mine when I came to Indiana. I have never regretted it yet. Perhaps you would do well to try it. I don’t understand much about your prospects at Sistersville but I don’t think a very desirable situation. If I were a minister I would rather have a home in the west than in an old settlement where they have had so many privileges……You wished to know the probable expenses to where we are. It cost me $11.00 but I think it would not cost you so much as you could come on the car for half price. We stop at Madison on the Ohio, then come on the car till within eighteen miles of Indianapolis. The stopping is at Dr. Murphey’s. You are then within one mile of Mr. W’s. If you inquire at Dr. M’s who lives in a brick house for Mr. Archibald Graham, he will conduct you to Mr. Woods. We are on the hand side of the R. Road as you come. We expect to have a communion the fourth Sabbath of September commencing Tuesday previous. If you can you had better come then…….My love to M.

Your sister as ever, N. A. Dinsmore."

NOTE: This letter was offered for sale on e-Bay
