Linda: You may have noticed that I was born in Liverpool, England, the ninth child of John Dingwall. All of my childhood I was told that my father's father, John Dingwall, or his parents, were from Dingwall, Scotland. I have no proof of that, however. All I have in documentation about the life of my grandfather, John Dingwall, is a General Register and Record of Shipping and Seamen dated 16th March 1881, certifying that in 1877, my grandfather, at the age of 22, had begun serving, for two years in the 657 ton sailing vessel Lord of the Isles, and that his conduct had been "very good." That would put his birth date around 1855. It is likely that he sailed from Liverpool, most boys went away to sea from Liverpool. At least it was employment, albeit very hard. My own father at the age of 13 sailed in the merchant navy and described to me those early years when he would buy his tobacco and soap from the chandlers and go on the tram to the docks to board ship for a two year trip. He told me that very early on, one would learn which of the ships to stay away from, those were the "death ships." Because I was the ninth child, my father was old enough to be my grandfather, so, in spite of the drawbacks of older parents, I did become familiar with the history of two generations; probably that accounts for my strong interest in history. I have only just achieved the leisure to start to trace some of my own Dingwall history. So, Linda, if I learn anything pertinent, I'll be sure to let you know. Best wishes.
