John Dingley, born 1608 in Cropthorne, Charlton,Worcestire,England. He married Sarah Chillingworth,born 1611 Marshfield,Ma., in 1635/1637 in Marshfield. John died July 1,1658, Sarah died aft Nov.1,1679.They are buried in Marshfield.John lived in Sandwich,Ma.1637, settled in Marshfield 1644. He was a blacksmith,Constable,Grand Juror, and Highway Surveyor. He was also a Deacon of the First Congregational Church of Marshfield. Nathaniel Hawthorne's story, "The Scarlet Letter",was said to have been based on an incident in the life of Deacon Dingley.
