John Dingley, born 1608 in Cropthorne,
Charlton,Worcestire,England. He married
Sarah Chillingworth,born 1611 Marshfield,Ma.,
in 1635/1637 in Marshfield. John died
July 1,1658, Sarah died aft Nov.1,1679.They
are buried in Marshfield.John lived in
Sandwich,Ma.1637, settled in Marshfield 1644.
He was a blacksmith,Constable,Grand Juror,
and Highway Surveyor. He was also a Deacon
of the First Congregational Church of
Marshfield. Nathaniel Hawthorne's story,
"The Scarlet Letter",was said to have been
based on an incident in the life of
Deacon Dingley. This information was taken
from the book,Marshfield, Town of Villages
1640-1990, by Cynthia Krusell.
