*The error of the marriage concerning David Worth Dingess has been perpetuated since the middle 1970's. Once an error is put into print or publication, often it becomes the "genealogical gospel" and many will continue to err therein.
*David Worth Dingess is found in the 1850 Federal census of Logan co. Va., at about age 5 years,listed in the family of Dr. Peter Dingess @ home visitation #235. The next and last time I have seen him in the records is in the 1860 Federal Census of Logan County, VA; his father now deceased and David Worth Dingess listed at about age 13(?) is with his mother, Mary (Stone) Dingess @ home visitation # 80 and his brother Zatto Cushion Dingess as a neighbor next door at visitation # 79.
However, the true future husband of Vanila Viola Stollings can be found at Home visitation # 160 with Eliza, about age 36 as head of the household. Eliza's husband, Julius Dingess is deceased. It is in this home you will find the future husband of Vanila/Venila Viola Stollings; listed in the 1850 census as Julius Dingess, between age 4 or 5 years old. Later he is to be seen in local records by his full name of: JULIUS DAVID DINGESS & some times written in records in the Logan County Court House as: David Julius Dingess, and sometimes as David J. other times as Julius D. Dingess. It is from the records of his future children as they give information that they are the dau. or son of David Julius or Julius David Dingess and his wife, who is most often listed as Vanila/Venila Stollings, the dau. of William A.& Elizabeth (Perry) Stollings in the 1860 Census @vis.#151 living with William Clark. I have indeed found her full name in records as: Venila Viola Stollings; and perhaps once as Viola Venila Stollings. The natural flavoring agent of "vanilla" is the origin of this new name for mountain girls. A nickname for girls named Vanila, is "Nile"...used as Aunt "Nile" or Grandma "Nile". The girls of the Applachian Mts. were so taken with the scent of this flavoring that it became perhaps the first flavoring to also be used as a girl's best (in dialect) "mountain parfume". It came up by boat and push boat from the Ohio River to the trading posts which were here and there in the region, along with bolts of cloth and other necessities which would bring the people to the trading post and later to the General Store.
In the 1870 Logan Co. WV. census you can find David Julius Dingess abt. age 22 and his wife, Venila Stollings, age 16, at Visitation # 89 Chapmanville District. No children born as yet. David Julius Dingess & Venila were also close to Venila's parents at visitation #83, Chapmanville, Dist. Here you find Vanila Stollings Dingess once again listed in the census with her parents, although she is also listed in a home with her husband David Julius Dingess @ Vis. #89. We see in this Census that one of Venila's brothers has been named for the first Mayor of Logan, which was first called Lawnsville, and in 1852 Lawnsville became the official town called "ARACOMA". IT Was not until the early 1900's that ARACOMA.. was voted by the town council to once again change, to the name LOGAN in honor of that Native American Indian Chief. This first mayor in 1852 was THOMAS DUNN ENGLISH, and as you may
see, Venila's brother was named Thomas Dunn English Stollings. Thomas Dunn English Stollings was married Aug. 07, 1886 to Mary A.Dingess, dau. of William & Nancy (Perry) Dingess.
In the 1880 Federal Census of Logan County, David J. Dingess, age 32 and wife, Vanila Viola (Stollings) Dingess are to be found @ home vis. #115-117 Chapmanville, Dist. with six children at home. Once again it's from the marriage records of these children as they marry which will help to confirm who actually married Venila Stollings.
To me the final "bazooka" confirmation I have found is the family Bible of of the Stollings / Farley Family in which you may see the marriage record recorded between David Julius Dingess and Venila Stollings. My notes indicate the Bible first belonged to Leander "Lee" Farley b. Apr. 1876 and his wife "Marthy", born June, 1881 who was a daughter of David Julius Dingess & his wife Venila Stollings. Indeed Martha named her first baby boy David Julius born, Jan.1899,after her own father. That Bible was in the possession of Gene Dingess who formerly worked at Applachain tire Co. in Logan, WV. He had the Bible at his home just above the mouth of Whitman creek in a hollow where his home was located. I am not sure where Gene lives now...but perhaps in the Harts Creek area? Hopefully this message will put to rest the statement that one David Worth Dingess, was the David who Married Venila Viola Stollings. Indeed it would seem probable that David Worth Dingess died rather young without ever having been married !
