William Dimmett born about 1680-1687 probable son of William and Susannah Dimmett. William (Jr. PCooper) married first to Eliza, in Baltimore Co. Maryland, and second to Sarah Smithers on the 3 Oct. 1744 (From Now in our Fourth Century, Some American Families {Baltimore Co. Maryland families 1659-1750,} by Paul Drake) William Sr. and Eliza had son James born about 1707, who married Barbara Broad on the 27th of March 17?, in Baltimore County, Maryland. By 1765 James and his wife Barbara assigned a lease to William Lux in Leesburg, Va. James and Barbara had the following Children; Sons James (born 17 Feb. 1748 Baltimore Co. Md,) William born ca. 1733-1740, and John. Daughters Ann Williams who married Edward Williams on the 20th Aug. 1772,) Barbara Dimmett, Attalea (Dimmett) Cole born on the 21st Feb. 1737 in Baltimore Co. Md., Elizabeth Ann(Dimmett) Cross who was born the 26th Aug. 1740 Baltimore, Md., and Mary (Dimmett) Cross who was born 29th Dec. 1734 in Baltimore, Md. James and Barbara's son William Dimmett was born ca. 1733-1740. William died prior to 1785, probably in NC. Wife's name unknown. Revolutionary War Soldier (NC record #1707) William had deceased by the time that his Government land grant had been issued for his Rev. War. service. State of NC (Rev. Army Accounts, Vol. III, Page 70 Folio 1 gives information on William Demmitt, #917 Private. State Records of NC, collected and edited by Walter Clark, Justice of the Supreme Ct. of NC Vol. XVII 1781-85 page 204 shows William Demmett #917 in the Abstracts of the Army Accounts of the North Carolina Line, receiving 40 pounds, 10 shillings and 4 pence received by Archibald Lytle. N. C. Military Warrant No 093 was issued in Sumner Co, to Archibald Lytle on 24th March 1787 for 640 acres of land (entry #1707) on the South side of the Cumberland River, granted to William Demmett. Also in this file #1707 is a letter to Col. Martin Armstrong from the Sec. of the State, James Glasgon Esq. The letter states "you are hereby required to lay off and survey for the heirs of William Demmett, 640 acres of land within the limits of the lands reserved by law for the officers and soldiers of the continental line in this state" and is dated 24 April 1785. The next paper in file #1707 is a receipt from John Demit, as heir to William Dimmit, "indorsing the within warrant to Arch lytle for Value Received" John Dimmett, son of William Dimmett was probably born about 1761 in North Carolina. John died after 1830, in Wilkes Co. North Carolina. John's son William Dimmett born on the 2nd Sep. 1782, married Stacy Walker on the 13th of Feb. 1802 in Rowan Co. NC. Signing as a witness to the marriage was William's father, John Dimmett. William and Stacy had son's James (my ancestor born 1806, married Elizabeth Ellis on the 4th of July 1824, died in Warrick Co. Indiana.) John B. born circa 1804-1807, death certificate lists age 79 at death, on the 22 May 1883 in Warrick Co, Indiana. 1850 census lists age 43 years, in Estil Co. Ky. Joel born ca. 1810, married Mahala Parks 15 May 1830 Wilkes Co. NC. Payton S. born 5 April 1815, married Lydia. Died on the 11 Aug. 1853 at age 38 years, 4 mo., and 6 days in Warrick Co. Indiana. Alfred born 1816, died 10 Mar. 1888, age 72 years in Warrick Co. Indiana. William born 25 Dec. 1819, married Nancy Jane Leslie. Richmond/Richard Payton born ca. 1822 and married Susanna Leslie. Richmond was the twin brother of Elizabeth. William and Stacy's daughter Elizabeth was unmarried on the 1850 census. There are other possible children of William and Stacy in Indiana, that are as yet unproven. All or most of the Indiana Dimmett's used the spelling Dimmitt. All of those that remained in North Carolina used the Dimmette spelling, and the Dimmett's who were of my line used both the Dimmett and Demmitt spelling. Could it be that John Board Dimmitt was actually named James Broad Dimmitt, in honor of his ancestor Barbara Broad? Seeing how many times the Dimmett name is spelled differently, makes me believe that his name was probably originally James Broad Dimmitt.
