The English landlords often condescended to rent parts of their landholdings to Irish tenants. Sometimes the rental contract lasted for generations. The tenants customarily erected dwellings (if you can call them that) on the property. With multiple rented parcels, it was possible to inheirit the land lying under the village.
The landowner could always terminate the rental agreenment for cause (non-payment of rent), evict the tenants, and destroy the buildings. This happened frequently between 1845 and abt 1880.
