Anyone with recent roots in Nova Scotia should discover the story of the Halifax Explosion. It happened in December, 1917 and is still considered the largest man-made explosion the world has ever known. There is a great multimedia site that tells the story
http://www.cbc.ca/halifaxexplosion/he1_promise/
Your great-grandfather Parker Dillman was born in 1909 and would have been 8 years old when it happened. Your grandfather would certainly not have been born yet. But the devastation and after-effects were so enormous that he probably would talk about it as though he had actually experienced it. For instance Halifax had for many years an inordinantly large population of blind people. This was because anyone in the city who were looking out their window at the time of the explosion had terrible eye injuries because of the force on the window glass exploding inwards. Nova Scotia still sends a huge, carefully chosen Christmas tree every year to Boston to light on their Common to say thank you to Bostonians for the help they sent us after the explosion.

I’m sure you must have lots of extended family in Nova Scotia. I’m afraid I can’t help you much there as this is not a name that I am connected to or researching. Just thought I might be able to help you in your search. Early Nova Scotia Vital Stats are available at
www.novascotiagenealogy.ca
It’s a free, searchable site. You will need to download a viewer program that is free onsite to see the actual record.

The birth record of Percy Parker Dillman can be seen at the above site. It states that he was born Mar 5, 1909 in Dartmouth to John Dillman Jr. and Laura (Beckwith) of Webster Street. Johns occupation is given as Brewer and he was also born in Dartmouth. Mrs. M A Leahey is the midwife who filled out the record. He must have preferred Parker as a first name because he signs it that way on his Marriage record. That also is available at the above site. Inform as follows
Groom:
Parker Dillman age 24, bachelor, occup - Gardener, religion – Protestant
Born Dartmouth, son of John Dillman and Laura Beckwith
Bride
Lena Shorten, age 26, spinster, occup – seamstress, religion – Catholic
Born Dartmouth, dau of William Shorten and Bella Shrum
Ceremony took place at St. Peters Glebe, (Catholic)Dartmouth, on November 4,1933

1901 and 1911 Canadian Census are available free at
www.automatedgenealogy.ca

The family of Parker Dillman in 1911 is as follows
John Dillman, head, born Nov 1866
Laura Dillman, wife born Apr 1870
Children: Gladys b. Dec 1891; Vera b June 1892; Carl b Jan 1895; Robie b Apr 1896, John b Oct 1896 (somebody goofed on this date but that’s what it says) Cecil b Nov 1899; Harrold b Oct 1900; Rita b Nov 1901; Helen born Aug 1904; Parker b Mar 1909
From 1911 Census of Canada, Halifax Co., Dartmouth page 10, Hester Street

The marriage record of the above John and Laura says they were married in Dartmouth Feb 25, 1890. John Dillman age 23, bachelor, Truckman, born Dartmouth son of John and Louisa. Laura Beckwith age 19, spinster, born Dartmouth dau of William and Eliza

The next household on this census page is that of Alton (mistakenly transcribed as Allan) and Bertha Dillman with their family: Roy age 16, Clyde age 15, Guy age 13; Howard age 10; Gordon age 6; Elmer age 5; and Catherine age 3 mos. According to his marriage record Alton is the son of William and Annie. William age 36, farmer, German ethnicity, born NS and Anna C Dillman age 30, born Nova Scotia can be found on the 1881 Census (Wyse’s Corner, Halifax Co., NS) with their children Alton F. age 7, Rossie age 5, Ida age 3and Stella R. age 1. He was the son of Daniel and Susan Dillman of Wyse’s Corner
I can’t work out the exact relationship between John and Alton but it appears they were 2nd cousins-once removed). Their wives however, Bertha and Laura were definitely sisters.

The oldest Dillman’s I can find were Jacob and Margaret. At the time of the 1871 Census they were living at Wyses Corner with their son Jacob age 47 and his wife Agnes. Jacob Senior was 81, born N.S. of German descent and so was his wife Margaret. The family also included the 7 children of Jacob Jr and Agnes. At the same time, in Wyses Corner there were two other households-that of Alexander Dillman age 44, his wife Jane and their eight children and Daniel Dillman age 49, his wife Susan and their thirteen children. Probably sons of Jacob Sr.

Happy Hunting
Burdette
