Hi Peggy,
It has been a long time since I visited this site.I don't know if it is because of frustration, or disappointment. My Grandmother is Perquita. She thought that William and Hattie Fleming were her parents. When she was 26 she discovered that she was actually the daughter of Floyd and Edna Dildine.
I have since learned that Hattie Fleming was Edna Dildine's sister. The family story goes that Edna and Floyd gave Perquita to the Flemings to raise so that they could pursue a career in Vaudeville.Hattie died before Perquita was 18 and William Fleming was a raging alcholic. When Perquita's home burned in 1951 and four of her five children were killed, the article on the front page of the paper shows my Mom (the surviving child) on her Grandmother Edna Dildine's lap.Apparently, somewhere in the 1950's the Dildine's came clean and told Perquita that she was indeed their daughter.
Still, it makes me sad to think that my Grandmother was A:deceived.and B:Still to this day, she is denied by the Dildine's.
So I don't have much heart for researching this side of the family. Mostly because of the way that the living Dildine's perceive my Grandmother as an interloper.
In any case, today, I discovered that Floyd Dildine was with his family in Sandpoint Idaho in the 1900 census. In the 1920 Census, Floyd, Edna and Perquita are listed in King County WA.Floyd and Edna were in the Grays Harbor Washington area in the 1930 census.
In the 1900 Census, it lists Floyd father as Albert Dildine and his Mother as Hattie.Albert was born in Ohio and his father was from Pennsylvania.
Quite a bit of a soap opera : )
