Robert Duncan Speer, my gg grandfather, married for his second wife, Nancy Jane (nee Dihel) McCreight, a daughter of John & Nancy Dihel.
"When his father died in 1849, Robert Duncan [Speer] was the only child left at home. He married Martha Bell on 9 Apr 1850, and they lived with his widowed mother, Elizabeth, along with ten year old William Nixon from Pennsylvania, who was attending school.
"A year after Elizabeth died, Robert and Martha moved to Kirkwood, Illinois (fall of 1854) with their two daughters, and the following April they moved eighteen miles north to Sunbeam, just south of Aledo.
"Martha died in March, 1866. She and Robert Duncan had been married nearly 16 years and had seven children. Two of the boys died as infants.
"Three years later on 14 Oct 1869, Robert married Nancy Jane Dihel Mc Creight (8 Mar 1838 - 10 Feb 1912), daughter of John W Dihel and Nancy B Miller of Sunbeam. Nancy's husband, Ambrose Orr McCreight, had been killed in the Civil War, leaving her with three children, Clara, Minnie and Alfred.
"Robert Duncan lived over 57 years in Sunbeam before his death at the age of 89. His wife Nancy died four days later at the age of 73. They had been married for 42 years. Both are buried in the Aledo Cemetery." -- Gordon Speer papers
Yes, I would be interested in any information you could supply concerning this John Dihel.
And, I wonder if there is an extra 'Bell' connection here -- ala Nancy Bell (Miller) Dihel & Martha Jane Bell -- don't know, yet ...
