Denise, It is a mystery why a family as prominent and wealthy as the Digges family in England and for decades in colonial Virginia is so elusive. The information I have gathered on the Digges has been collateral to my research on the Pate family. Last month, I posted on this website "Timeline for Cole Digges, 1691-1744, Virginia". From my research on the Internet, that is the most comprehensive list of data on this man. I agree with the names as posted by Pam. I am showing below some information I have collected on this man and his family. As always, dates are hard to pin down, and I have found contradictory dates. The below represents my best guesses, and all dates are subject to review and correction. Cole Digges' date of death is shown on his tombstone as 1744, which states that he died in his 52nd year, making his birthyear 1692. This wording can be found on the Internet. I have been unable to find either a year of birth or death for his wife Elizabeth Power, nor their marriage date. Here are the children and dates I have found from a variety of sources, listed in my presumed order of birth: Edward ? - 1769, m.1739 Mary 1717 - 1744 Susannah ? - ? m. 1739 William ? - ? Dudley 1729 - 1790, m1. by 1748, m2. 1760 According to Charles Hatch, historian, William and Dudley were under age 21 when Cole died in 1744. All three sons served in the House of Burgesses: Edward 1736 - 1749 York County William 1752 - 1771 Warwick County Dudley 1752 - 1776 York County Using the above facts, you can back into some of the dates. If Edward, who inherited the Edward Digges Plantation, was in the HOB in 1736, he must have been at least 21 years old, making his birthyear c. 1715. Which in turn would have made the marriage of Cole and Elizabeth c. 1714. William inherited the Newport News Plantation in Warwick County. Dudley inherited the family's town properties in Williamsburg and Yorktown. You gave two dates in your inquiry: William b. 1734 Elizabeth b.c. 1697. Do you have any documentation for these dates? Also, if you or anyone else in this forum can furnish any of the dates missing above or corrections for any of them, I would appreciate having them. A. J.
