Leeanne Majcen - I believe that you have assisted Chris Paton the genealogist who is tracing Diggles for me - thankyou for your input.
I can give you some information that goes back beyond the 1800s that is probably connected to 'your' Diggles that came from Chris Paton who attributed it to Ian McAlpine.
The place is Prestwich in the borough of Bury very close to Manchester. St Mary is the church of St Mary, I believe. Your Diggles (and maybe mine) go back to Robert Diggle (of Diggle Fold, Prestwich) who married Margaret Ravald in 1659 and who died in 1680.
They had two sons, Robert and Thomas.
Robert (1662-1758) married Ann Oldham in 1687.
They had one surviving son, Robert.
Robert (1700 - 1738) married Elizabeth Heaton in 1728.
They had one son, Robert, born in 1732
There were daughters but as they don't keep the name when they marry I have left them out of the picture (sorry!).
So the next problem is how to connect that last Robert Diggle to your Diggles (and perhaps mine).
My line of the family can only be taken back to 1819:-
Chris has given me:
Samuel Diggle (b. 1819 Manchester)
Married Mary Garner in 1842) Son, George born 1844.
George married Elizabeth O'Brien (date unknown)
Sons Samuel, born 16.6.1864 (My much sought for Grandfather) and George born 1869 (and five daughters)
Samuel married Isabella Winfield Wrench (born 1861)and had 4 sons, Samuel Winfield (died 1963), Harold Winfield (died around 1962), Albert Winfield (died 1980) and George Ernest (died 1972) - and four daughters.
George Ernest was my Father.
I have posted another message today concerning my Grandfather, Samuel. I believe you told Chris that you have no Samuels in your list of Australian Diggles so maybe I'll find him in South Africa. Anything you have to help would be gratefully received.
