from what I know- my family name "Diggins" descended from the isle of Guernsey (sp?)- English. I have read other postings here from Ireland 'Diggins" families- I have no known history of Ireland in my family tree. I think there are two "diggins" families- one Irish- which was originally Diggin, Diggen, or something similar. My family tree shows no record of our last name ever changing upon arrival to the U.S.: it has always been "Diggins".
I hope this helps. My great grand father was Charles Frances Diggins. My "Diggins" is mostly based in PA.
