This reply should be considered together with that from John Diffey (12/12/01) because I discuss people he mentions in his post. Forgive my intruding into your discussion, but I am connected to the Maryland Diffeys/Diffees and have some limited info that might prove useful in your quest.

Alexander Diffey -- this gentleman is mentioned in a number of state (Maryland) and Federal census summaries: (1) 1772, Ann Arundel County census (AACS); (2) 1783, AACS, in Elkridge Hundred; (3) 1790, Federal Census, Baltimore Co, 2 males over 16, two females (this would correspond to himself and unknown wife, son Alexander {of whom more below}, daughter Leah {ditto}; (4) 1800, Fed Cen Ann Arundel Co, next to Robert Burgoon (see paragraph on Leah Diffey below); (5) 1810, Fed Cen Baltimore Co, in Soldier's Delight Hundred.

The fluctuation in his residence between Ann Arundel and Baltimore counties ought not to alarm the researcher, since these are adjacent counties today, and probably had somewhat "flexible" or poorly defined borders in immediate post-Colonial times. It might have been possible to have been a resident of both at different times without physically moving one's domicile.

The proximity of Alexander Diffey and family to that of Robert Burgoon (both in Elkridge Hundred in 1783, both in the same part of Ann Arundel in 1790 and 1800, both in Soldier's Delight Hundred, Baltimore Co by 1810) is what lends credence to my conclusion that the Leah Diffey who married Robert Burgoon and accompanied him to Ohio in 1820 was, in fact, the daughter of Alexander Diffey.

The other child I have identified so far would be Alexander's son, Alexander (2), who married Mary LOW/LOWE (abt 1769, MD - 2AUG1862, near Ellicot Mills, MD), probably a sister of the Elizabeth Low who married Robert Burgoon's brother, Charles.

Alexander Diffey and Mary Low had at least two children, (1) Victor (4JUL1805, MD - 18OCT1888, Baltimore City, Baltimore Co, MD), and (2) Mary Ellen (married Dennis Reynolds, 30MAR1841, MD, n.f.i.). There's certainly room for your Owen in that brood, especially since I surmise that the Diffeys were at that time Roman Catholic (the Burgoons certainly were, and families of 12-15 children were not at all uncommon).

I have no way to connect "my" Diffeys/Diffees with the NC branch either, but phone directory searches fail to yield great mobs of Diffeys in present-day Maryland, so they must have gone somewhere.
