Pat, Many thanks for ending the prolonged drought as regards info on the elusive Maryland Diffeys (in all their magnificent variety of spellings). I had previously found references to Alexander Diffey (presumably the elder) in indices of the 1772 and 1783 Anne Arundel Co censuses (the latter had him in Elkridge Hundred), and in the index of the 1810 Federal Census (in Soldier's Delight Hundred, near Baltimore City). Is the Prudence Lowe you mentioned related to Mary Low? Finally, have you a guess or knowledge as to the ethnicity of Diffee/Diffey? The "Brian" you found reference to would suggest an Irish or Scottish connection, though the surname arguably has French characteristics as well (perhaps a corruption of De Fey or De Fé). Again, I appreciate your response. I spent a year each in Baltimore and in Anne Arundel as a small boy, and ten years in the DC area as an adult, and never dreamed I had ancestors connected to those spots. [For all I know, the tough kid who used to steal my lunch money was a Diffey!]
