Mary Ellen Diffey was a daughter of Alexander (2) Diffey and Mary Low. I have no other data on Mary Ellen except that she and Dennis Reynolds married in Maryland on 30 MAR 1841. I have NOT personally verified this marriage date OR the realtionship; my info came from a descendant of the Lows.

Alexander (2) Diffey was born abt 1773, probably in Baltimore, Frederick, or Ann Arundel County, MD, and died 24APR1869 near Ellicott City, MD.

Mary Low (abt 1769, MD - 2AUG1862, near Ellicott Mills, MD). I have no ancestral data on her, but a sister of hers, Elizabeth Low, married Charles Burgoon.

Alexander (2)'s parents were Alexander (1) Diffey and Caroline Unknown. One of their daughters, Leah, married Robert Burgoon, brother of the Charles (above). MD and Federal census data show that Alexander(1) was a neighbor of Robert and Charles Burgoon in several maryland locations, and I have been told that the Lows were as well.

Several branches of Burgoons, including those married to Lows, gravitated to Ohio or PA in the early 1800s and, interestingly, there are tidbits about Diffeys there as well, but I have no direct link between them and the MD clan. My THEORY is that we're dealing with people related to each other marrying people themselves related to each other, many with repetitive given names and a talent for not having much official evidence of their existence, location, or ancestry survive into the 21st Century.

That's the sum of my knowledge about Mary Ellen and her forebears. As to the Arkansas Diffeys, I can only say that my research into them is very spotty, mostly seeking to link them to the MD branch, without success. Apparently, the numerous "Deep South" Diffeys mostly descend from some in South Carolina, and their ancestry is unknown to me. It's possible that the MD and SC clans had a common Diffey ancestor. For example. a William Diffey is said to have married in Frederick Co, MD "about 1729," which might make him the father of Alexander (1); then again, it might not.

Be aware that the name is spelled various ways -- Diffey, Diffy, Diffie, even Defi and Defie. It is variously attributed to Wales, Ireland, Normandy, France proper, England, and who-knows-where else. There are at least two fora on the name here, and maybe more.

Good luck researching a fascinatingly elusive family or families!
