The 1790 Federal Census of the Fayette district of Anson County, North Carolina and see Joseph Isgett. Scroll down a few names and see Nathaniel Dabbs. Land deeds show John Diffy and (mother??)Nancy Diffy, sold land 1800 and 1803 respectively. At least, a portion, of this land was sold by state to Nathaniel Dabbs 1790. Meaning that in the 1790s John and Nancy were neighbors of Joseph Isgett. I would think that both families went to Darlingtonl,Sc at the same time. We know that there was an adult Nancy there 1804, because she was customer of Bright Williamson's store that year. Nancy Deffee or Diffee, was still Darlington 1810 according to the census. John was not there. Neither John or Nancy were there 1820. In 1816 John was on Indian Territory bordering Hall County, Georgia. He was forced off by the Government and moved to Lincoln County, Tn., just across the line from Hazel Green, and Huntsville, Alabama.
Nancy was still Hall County 1820 and 1830 living near her daughter Nancy, who married Roland Johnson. John Diffy moved to Benton (later named Calhoun) Alabama. There were also two of his sons there, and some daughters. I searched these people several years, even up into Arkansas where they eventually moved. I knew them like the back of my hand.
Prior to their moving to Arkansas, a new Wm Diffey showed up 1860 living next door to Stephen, one of John's boys. When the searching was done, this Wm was the son of James and Sarah Diffey of Jefferson County, Alabama. James was the brother of my 3x grandfather Charles Cowell Diffey. James and Charles were both born prior to 1810 SC. I understant that this is a long way around to prove that the Diffeys and the DeFees of Darlington, are the same people. What really cinched it for me, was that, later in life Charles Cowell Diffey, aided a man named Goins in shooting a gentleman, from some bushes, while he was at his supper,
in Kemper County, Mississippi. If anyone can refute, dispute, or otherwise shoot holes in this, please feel free to do so. John Diffey
