The Alexander Diffey who enlisted in 1861 and was discharged in 1864 served in the Patapsco Guards- MD Infantry. He was the son of Victor Diffey ((1805-1888) and his second wife Mary Ann Midkerf (1812-1878). Alexander died in December 1903 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Baltimore City. Buried with him are his wife Mary Emily (nee Tray?) who died November 1900, his daughter Minerva Kinley who died Sept 1890, his grandson James A. Kinley who died January 1912. Also a Mary E. Kinley April 1911, Maggie Kinley (wife of James) April 1915 and a stillborn child of James & Maggie Kinley who died July 1904.
The Alexander Diffey who served with General Hooker died on October 16, 1863 at Mount Airy, MD. He was married to Mary Spurrier and had children: Thomas L. born 3/5/1849, Alexander born 3/7/1850, Susan N. born 2/15/1852, Charles S. born 2/3/1854, Francis Marion born 5/5/1856 and died Jan 1863, John B. born 8/9/1858, Emma L. born 10/9/1860, and Oliver Woodside born 9/27/1862 and died 11/4/1863. According to the 1900 census, Mary Spurrier Diffey claimed to have had 8 children with 6 still living. She was living with her daughter Susan Walters (Mrs. James)in New Castle County, Delaware. James Walters and Susie Diffey wed December 8, 1870.
