Well, I am more than a little confused, though I understand your question. I had Owen and Alexander (1828-48) as brothers, sons of Victor Diffey. And Owen, whom I thought to be the father of Alexander A. Diffey, was supposedly married in 1864 in Ross Co, OH, so unless (a) Alexander A. was NOT Owen's son (I have no birthdate or other data on A.A.), or (b) Owen sired the Alexander Augustus by some first wife I do not know of, I cannot figure this out.

On the OTHER hand, your question made me go back to my file, where I discovered an egregious error: an Alexander A. was married in Ross Co, OH on 31DEC1874, only 10 years after his alleged (by me, apparently) father Owen married Miss Poe. I must have been captivated by the Ross County reference and overlooked the obvious problem with dates.

New conclusion: Alexander A. and Owen were brothers who emigrated to OH together. I think it is likely that they were the sons of Alexander Diffey (1828-48).

Here's how I string these people together under my new scheme (again, mostly based on ignorance):

1. A William Diffey was married in Frederick Co, MD in about 1729. Right age and place to be Alexander "1" Diffey's father or grandfather, but I have no other data and the marriage "fact" is undocumented in my files at any rate. [I notice that the original NC Diffey was also a William, whatever that might mean for my theory).

2. Alexander "1" Diffey -- well documented in censuses in Ann Arundel and Baltimore Cos between 1772 and 1810.

3. a. LEAH Diffey, Alexander "1"'s daughter, married neighbor (from censuses) Robert Burgoon.
b. ALEXANDER "2" Diffey (abt 1773 to 29APR1869, MD), who married Mary Low.
c. Possibly, JEMIMAH Diffee, who married William Stevens, 14APR1808, Baltimore, MD.

4. a. Children of Leah Diffee not germane to this discussion. Their number is legion.
b. Children of Alexander "2"
(1) VICTOR (4JUL1805 - 18OCT1888, MD), who married Therea Chalp/Theresa Scharf
(2) Possibly MARY ELLEN, documented as having married Dennis Reynolds on 30MAR1841 in MD
(3) Possibly JANE, who married Patrick Ginnyman, 31DEC1836, MD
c. Children of Jemimah -- unknown

5. a. Children of Victor
(1) ALEXANDER "3" (1828, MD - 17MAY1848, unknown location -- but his wife, Mary Spurrier, died in Baltimore in 1907)
(2) Possibly MATANDA (?, MD - 31JUL1898, Oella, MD), married John Robinson
b. No info on children of Mary Ellen or Jane.

6. a. Children of Alexander "3"
(1) ALEXANDER A(ugustus?) (no dates), married Laura Doty, 31DEC1874, Ross Co, OH
(2) OWEN (no dates), married Rebecca Poe, 18SEP1864, Ross Co, OH
b. No info on children of Matanda

7. a. Child of Alexander A. -- LENA R., b. 3SEP1878, Ross Co, OH
b. Child of Owen -- possibly MICHAEL, married Mary Breene, 10JAN1884, Greene Co, OH (2 counties to West of Ross). He could not be the son of "A.A." unless he married before his 10th birthday or was born 7-8 years before his parents married.

Where I show marriage dates, they come from state compendia of marriages.

By the way, Ross Co is where Chillicothe is located, so that confirms a link between Alexander A. and Alexander Augustus.

Much of the above is speculation, but dates, where known, are consistent with the hypotheses. It may be a stretch to have Alexander "3" marry, produce two sons, and die by age 20, but some people started young. It's entirely possible that Alexander "3" and Ms. Spurrier themselves moved to Ross Co, OH, and Mary later moved back to Maryland, perhaps when "A.A." headed for Arkansas.

Please shoot as many holes in these assertions as you can.
