What you suggest, sir, is quite reasonable and persuasive. Scharf is, at least, a "real" surname, and the connection to the NC Diffeys is quite interesting. I have hypothesized (from my position of supreme ignorance) that if there is a connection between the MD and NC families, it might stem from the Old World or the earliest years in the New. While the usual case would be for two or three siblings to settle right next to each other (for protection, company, and support), there must have been other instances where siblings split up and dispersed, while the branches still maintained contact with each other through succeeding generations. I have also speculated (without any data) on the origins of the Diffey/Diffee name, in all its variant spellings. Was it French (Du Fé or something of that ilk)? If not Continental French, was it a Norman French name brought to England in 1066 and changed gradually over the centuries? Is it Irish, a variant of Duffey? Does your own family have any stories or legends that would shed light on the ethnicity of the surname? Thanks, Step Tyner Notify Administrator about this message?
