Deitz massacre

Deborah Cote Deitz,

I am from Berne, and am also a direct descendent of Johan Peter Deitz. To the best of my knowledge the massacre took place on the farm of his son Johannes Deitz on Switzkill Road in Berne where the DAR sign is located. If not, I am very interested in finding out where it was, since the Deitz's farmed the land there at the time. I apologize for my error in saying that William not a Captain. A Sept 7 1871 letter from General Taylor to then Gov. Geo. Clinton stated: "A Party of the Enemy Consisting of fifteen Tories & Indians, murdered Capt. Ditz's Father & Mother, his wife & four children with one Scotch Girl & took himself off after having Exhibited to his View this horrid Scene; the house
and Barn was Burnt. They were pursued & overtaken at Breakabeen, but permitted to escape." I am certain his father was Johannes Deitz. The account by Roscoe misidentifed him as his father Johan Peter Deitz. This identification error was perpetuated in the genealogies by George F Deitz and Stanton L Deitz although Stanton Deitz got the date correct. They also confused Capt. William Deitz with his uncle William who coincidently died in 1782 and left a will and numberous heirs. The four young children of the captured Capt. Wm. Deitz were killed and thus he had no heirs. The Simms account of the massacre mistakenly implies that it took place in 1782. Actually Capt. Wm. must have lived about a year in captivity since he was seen at Ft. Niagara the summer of 1782. Stanton Deitz had the date right, and even says that the tombstone of the massacred elder Deitz says "Johannes Deitz." His problem is he believed Roscoe, when Roscoe was clearly wrong. It is obvious that the William he described left a will and heirs and did not die at Ft. Niagara, but rather at home in Schoharie. I would be pleased to share my evidence with your husband. Hal Miller
