The William Deitz who was captured in the Deitz massacre of Sept 1781 in Switzkill, Berne, NY died in captivity about a year later at Ft. Niagara. I am having someone search the Canadian war records for evidence surrounding his captivity and death. He was the son of Johannes Deitz and Maria Overbaugh both of whom were also massacred as were the wife and four young children of William Deitz. Contrary to most reports, this William Deitz was not a Capt. in the Rev. War. The Capt. Wm. Deitz was his uncle, the brother of Johannes. Their father was Johan Peter Deitz and Anna Eva Becker (no Eugeltie Weiner as has been popularly believed). Please feel free to contact me for additional details of the massacre and the family. Hal Miller
