Ian Campbell,
My g.grandfather SCHREIBER's mother (a BITTMANN) was born in Preston, 1839; her family was from Alsace. G.grandma's postcard album contains cards from cousins, aunts and uncles in Preston, Galt, Berlin, and farther east in Welland, Chippawa, Netherby, etc. etc. There was an "Aunt Lizzy," a Bess, a Henry, and a Laura. One family is DELL. Lilian Dell must have been my grandmother's age (b. about 1899). G.grandma had a grandmother Margaretha ne้ Russi (Rusie, Rufi, Roosi, etc-- the family record book is in a variant German, Gothic, so I'm told--it's hard to figure out; the name was spelled Russi by my grandmother. Canadian cousins of the Dells include PLYLY (in the U.S. they bought a vowel and became BLEYLE), and there are SCHREIBERs and SCHREINERs and LOBSTEIN.
If you think there is any connection bet. the Dells and your Diehls, let me know and I will supply more details from the album. The only "official" thing about this material is postmark and date.
Carol
