Hello,
I am a document collector and dealer and recently purchased a very interesting document entitled "Constitution of the Portland, Ripley & Westfield Young Men’s Temperance Society 1827". These cities/towns are in Chautauqua County, NY. Below is a full transcription of the document which contains more than 90 names including a Columbus Dickson. Transcription:
A number of the young men of the towns of Portland and Ripley having witnessed with the feelings of unmingled regret the widespread and alarming spread of intemperance in our land and the incalculable evils thereby entailed upon society and considering that the habits both good and bad which follow a man through life are generally formed in the season of youth have agreed to form themselves into a society for the promotion of temperance and to adopt as the basis of their union the following:
Art 1: This society shall be called the Portland, Ripley and Westfield young men’s temperance society.
Art 2: The object of this society shall be the formation of correct habits among its number and among those around them at that period of life when the relish for ardent spirits and the practice of kindred vices are most easily acquired so far as their influence extends.
Art 3: The objects of this society may be farther extended to mutual improvement in science and general intelligence by the addition of a library and by meetings for the discussion of interesting subjects at any time hereafter if a majority shall think proper.
Art. 4: The officers of this society shall consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer and six Managers. It shall be the duty of the president or vice-president to preside at all meetings of this society; the secretary to record the proceedings of the meeting and keep the papers of the society; of the Treasurer to receive the funds of the society and dispose of them as the Managers shall direct and of the Managers to attend to all the business of the society, see that its rules are not violated and bring to account ant member that shall violate the pledge hereafter given.
Art. 5: Any member who shall violate the rules of this society may be expelled by a vote of a majority of the members present at any regular meeting after being heard in his defense.
Art 6: Any person may become a member of this society by subscribing the following pledge:
We the undersigned do mutually agree to abstain from the use of ardent spirits except for medicinal purposes neither to give nor receive them as a token of friendship and to use our influence among our young friends and others to promote the principle and practice of entire abstinence with the exception above named.
Art. 7: Any person may withdraw from this society and absolve himself from the foregoing pledge on giving notice thereof in writing to the secretary.
Art. 8: This constitution shall not be altered without the consent of two thirds of the members present at a stated meeting.
Art. 9: This society shall meet annually at the village of Westfield on the first Thursday of June in each year at which time its officers shall be chosen.
