I could be a case of phonetic spelling. The census takers actually filled out the census, rather than the individual filling it out. For example, although in the various censuses I've found on my Dicksons they spell the last name correctly, but the spellings of the first names vary. For example, my grandmother Marie, shows up on one as Maria, and on another as Mary. On the other line in my family, Wilson, it shows up on one census as Willson.
