JOSIAH DICKSON

Birth:        30 Nov 1802       GA: HANCOCK:
Burial:        AL: COLUMBIA: WALDO: DICKSON FAMILY CEMETERY
Death:        22 Nov 1871       AL: COLUMBIA: WALDO:
Father:        Michael Dickson JR. (ca1748-<1803) Unproven
Mother:        Martha Howard (-<1824) Unproven
Marriage:       21 Jan 1824       GA: NEWTON: Unproven

I have been attempting to prove or disprove that CYRUS DICKSON (Michael Dickson and Martha Howard) is the same person as Josiah Dickson who was born in Hancock County, Georgia and died in Waldo, Columbia County Arkansas.

There seems to be a common assumption in various web postings that his name is JOSIAH CYRUS DICKSON. I find no proof of this whatsoever and am afraid that genealogists are just copying family sheets without any documentation or proof.

Arguments Against:

1. In Michael Dickson's Will (dated 27 Aug 1803) he mentions only CYRUS and not JOSIAH by name. It also mentions a brother DAVID. Curiously, this Michael Dickson earlier had a son named Josiah. It has often been assumed that this Josiah died and that a second male child was named JOSIAH CYRUS.

2. In the 1824 Marriage License in Newton County, GA, often given for JOSIAH and MARY L. DICKSON, lists the name of CYRUS and not JOSIAH.

Arguments For:

1. JOSIAH was in Newton County during the time of the 1824 marriage.

In 1821, at the age of 20, Josiah left home when he obtained land by the draw in the 1821 Land Lottery. He drew lot number 391, located in the 16th District and northernmost corner of Newton County (formerly Henry County).

His brother David Dickson also received land in Newton County and married there about 1830.

2. JOSIAH and MARY L. DICKSON’S first-born child, WILLIAM CRAWFORD DICKSON was born one year after the marriage of CYRUS gives some credence that this is indeed Josiah mentioned in these documents. In addition, William’s middle name of CRAWFORD echoes the name of MICHAEL DICKSONS mother, LUCINDA CRAWFORD indicating a probable familial connection.

None of this provides proof, but only supposition.

In the Dickson Family Cemetery in Waldo, Arkansas, their names appear as JOSIAH and MARY L. DICKSON. Josiah's birth date is given as 1802.

This agrees with his age and dates provided on subsequent census records. Because of this I am confident that this is not the Josiah Dickson who married Mary McCook in 1810. Was this Josiah the elder born of Michael?

Any help clearing this up would be appreciated.
