This is one version of the origin of the name. As you must realize, there are others. One being the descendants of the Decae estates in Norway, displaced at the time of the battle of Hastings (1066) when the vikings were trounced at Stamford Bridge prior to Williams victory over King Harold. William permitted the surviving vikings from Stamford Bridge to settle in Northumberland, and they spread north from there.
