On ancestry.com recently I found a little book called "The Dickson Letters", put together by James O. Carr, a descendent of William Dickson of Duplin County NC. The only mention of the book I could find on this board was from 1998, so I thought it might be good to mention it again. William Dickson, who was writing these letters around 1780-85 wrote these letters to relatives, talking about other relatives and events of the day..mostly the Revolutionary War, but also some incredible sections talking about the new constitution that he was a NC representative in the process of ratification. He talks how he feared that the new constitution that might give the president too much power and would too easily make it possible for a Julius Caesar type ruler to take control. Really incredible writing, and to think that he was a Dickson makes it even more exciting. One of the most fascinating parts of the letters to me was his talking about his family in Ireland. They were in the County of Monaghan, near the city of Newry. Monaghan is in Northern Ireland. William Dickson was a prominent Presbyterian and talks about such in his letters. To me, this implies that those Dicksons anyway were Scotch-Irish. What this means for my Dicksons, who settled in Halifax VA around 1730 or so, is debatable, but I think it has some meaning. Really fascinating letters...the book is only about 45 pages long, and it defintely made getting the extra subscription at ancestry.com worth it. I would definitely recommend it for anyone belonging to that line of Dicksons. Notify Administrator about this message?
