Hugh Dickson of Dickson Co. TN
For many years it has been generally accepted and widely published that Hugh DICKSON who bought 150 acres on Dry Branch in 1803 in Dickson co. TN was the son of Capt. Joseph DICKSON whose will is found on Page 1, Will Book A of Dickson County.
In William Nesbitt's book, "The Primal Families of the Yellow Creek Valley", Nesbitt portrays Capt. Joseph DICKSON as the "father of Dickson Co".New evidence reveals that he may have been the "father of Dickson Co." but he was NOT the father of Hugh DICKSON of Dry Branch!
Early Dickson County records reveal there were two Hugh DICKSONs.Our line is from Hugh DICKSON of Dry Branch. In some of the early records one is listed as Hugh DICKSON, Jr. but that does not mean a father/son relationship. The younger Hugh was the son of Joseph DICKSON but he didn't buy land on Dry Branch. He was just a few years younger than Dry Branch Hugh DICKSON.
Both men signed the petition to form Dickson County. Both men are found in the 1820 census. Both men are mentioned in Dickson county court records.
However, Dry Branch Hugh DICKSON remained in Dickson County.Joseph's son, Hugh DICKSON, who had married Hannah HICKS moved to Franklin County, AL with his disabled brother, Abner DICKSON.
Franklin Co. Hugh DICKSON was the one who served in Michael MOLTON's Co. in the War of 1812 while he was living in Dickson Co.He is found in the Franklin Co. census in 1830 and 1840 and his widow, Hannah HICKS DICKSON,is found there in the 1850 & 1860 census. This Hugh died in 1843 vs. Dry Creek Hugh who died ca. 1847/1848.Hannah applied for bounty land for her husband's service in the War of 1812 but apparently the application was rejected because she couldn't prove the marriage. The marriage records of Dickson County were destroyed by a tornado in 1830.
The new challenge is find the father of Dry Branch Hugh DICKSON.The new theory is that several children of James DICKSON of NC (a brother to Capt. Joseph DICKSON) came to Tennessee with their uncle, Joseph. Those children may be Hugh, Alexander, Edward, Elizabeth and possibly another brother.Alexander and Elizabeth are documented as being chldren of James DICKSON.Hugh and Alexander lived very close together near where Dry Branch, Salmon Branch and Town Branch all enter Yellow Creek.
I would welcome the opportunity to exchange information with anyone interested in this DICKSON line.
