John, I recently disvovered the info you posted on-line about the Charles William Dickson Family.I hope this reaches you since it has been several years. My ggrandfather was Immanuel Jackson Dickson, and according to what you posted he was a son of Charles William by his third wife Lavinia (you say Croff, but I wonder if it wasn't Cross, as double ss looked like ff in old hadwriting and there were many Cross family in Davidson Co.).
It is unclear to me whether he was born in South or North Carolina because later census records say N.C. but if his older brother George was born in S.C. that doesn't make sense.
Anyway, when Immanuel reached manhood, he went back to N.C. and married Ida Vaden Garris (b.1877), daughter of Nancy J. Gaddy and Benjamin Leonides Garris of Anson Co., NC.Immanuel and Ida were married July 21,1895 in Monroe in Union Co. The name was recorded as Dixson and that is how it stayed. Their children are as follows:
William L. b. 1897 in NC never married
Nellie Mae b. 1898 in NC m. James Walter Russell (my grandparents)
Carl b.1900in NC.d.1988 New Bern, N.C Charlotte policeman
Claude b.1904 in SC.mid-30s hit by car in Charlotte, m.Louise
Earnest b.1905 SC d.1980 Wife Erma, dau, Janet
Mabel b. 1910 in SC m. Patrick Turner, Two children Dick and Pat
Benjamin Harold "Buddy" severely injured during WWII, committed suiced in late 70's
Mildred b. 1922 in Charlotte
The family moved to SC. probably the Spartanburg area, from about 1900 to 1914, then moved to Charlotte, NC where they stayed.
Immanuel was a farm agesnt and died from untreated mouth cancer around 1942.
All this is based on my Dad's recollections and on Census records.
My father, James Lewellyn Russell was the only child of Nellie Dixson and James Walter Russell. He was born April 22, 1920 and is still living in Germantown, Md. with his wife Catherine Kling Russell.
They had three children: Paul Gregory b.Nov. 24, 1946
Me, Linda Susan Russell, b. July 9, 1949 and Neil David b. jan. 9, 1951.
This has been such a thrill to finally have found who my ggrandfather's ancestors were.As you said the facts dispell some of the family legends but confirm parts of it. Thanks for posting what you discovered from the old bible and I hope this helps fill in some of the remaineing gaps.I should also mention that my father remembers Tima Ann visiting them when he was about 10 (1930) and again a few years later. He does not remember if she was married; she always came alone.
