Dear Grace: Elizabeth Dickman was my gg grandmother. She married John H. Cody in the 1850s and accompanied him to the wilds of eastern Kansas prior to the Civil War. He was killed in 1862 or 1863 by two men who rode with Quantrill's raiders. At that point, she returned to Iowa City with her three young sons. At some point, she married a man named Johnson. In the 1880s, they moved to Decatur County, Kansas, where they lived in a sod house and were early postmasters for pioneer families in the area. Elizath was a renowned healer and midwife, and she rode off alone to neighboring sod houses to be of service to those in need. I have her death certificate and her obituary. The death certificate listed her father's name as "Frederick Dickman," and only mentioned her mother's last name; something like DelNoss. Frederick was born in Germany, while his wife was American-born. Do you have any more information on this family? I'd be glad to exchange what I have. Regards, Cathie Cody
