This article also disproves ancestry of Capt John Dickinson whom Wharton originally said was brother to Nathaniel. Capt John was listed as born 1602 at ELY, Cambridge, ENG and came with the Winthrop fleet in 1630 to Boston with brothers "Nathaniel and Thomas"on possibly the ship Arabella or Ambrose. He was at Barnstable, MA by 1647 and a ship captain for trader Samuel Mayo, traveling to Oyster Bay NY where he sold goods to the Quakers there. There is confusion over who his first wife was, but he married 2nd Elizabeth Howland Hicks dau. of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley of the MAYFLOWER and widow of Ephraim Hicks in 1651. She was much younger, born approx 1625. They removed to Oyster Bay NY by 1658 and had 9 children between 1652 and 1675. Capt John died in 1681 and named wife Elizabeth and 9 children in his will. Two sources state he had two children by first wife but there is no mention in his will. Also his birth date seems suspect, now that Wharton's work has been disproven. What is Capt John's correct ancestry, since he is NOT brother of Nathaniel? Where and when was he born, who were his parents, and did he come to the New World in 1630? Is it possible that there were two Johns, father and son, whose record was confused as one record, with the son born perhaps around 1625 who married Elizabeth Howland. If only one John, this makes Capt John age 73 when his last child was born.
